Biography

Jan W. M. Bergmans was born in Tilburg, The Netherlands, on August 15, 1957. He received the ‘Ingenieur’ (=M.Sc.) and Ph.D. degrees from Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 1981 and 1987, respectively.
From 1981 to 1982 he was a manager for communication projects in the Royal Netherlands Navy. He joined Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 1982. There, he has been engaged in research on signal processing techniques for digital transmission and recording systems. In 1988 and 1989 he was exchange researcher in the digital video recording group of Hitachi Central Research Laboratories, Tokyo, Japan. From 1991 to 1999 he was co-leader of a team that conceives and develops signal processing techniques and integrated circuits for digital video recorders, hard-disk drives, and optical recording systems.
Since 1999 he has been professor and chairman of the Signal Processing Systems group (SPS) at Eindhoven University of Technology. His current research concerns signal processing techniques for digital recording and transmission systems.
Prof. Bergmans is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has published numerous papers as well as a book (Digital Baseband Transmission and Recording Systems, Kluwer, Boston, 1996), and holds around 30 US patents. From 1986 to 1992 he was a member of the board of the Dutch Electronics and Radio Association (NERG). Since 1999 he is treasurer of the IEEE Benelux Section. He is an advisor to Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and the Data Storage Institute in Singapore.
